DepEd urged to stop automatic payroll deductions of teachers’ loans

ACT Teachers party-list has requested the Department of Education (DepEd) to stop the automatic payroll deduction of teachers’ debts.

“The DepEd should not be involved in the debt collection activities of private lending institutions,” said ACT Teachers Rep. France Castro in a radio interview last Sunday.

“That kind of practice by lending agencies needs to stop,” Castro added.

According to her, it is not the DepEd’s job to collect loans on behalf of lending agencies. The agency should not hesitate to forego the service fee it receives from lending agencies.

“There is a 2% service fee that DepEd and teachers benefit from for their provident loan,” Castro said.

“The DepEd should not be involved in debt collection,” she emphasized.
