World Teachers’ Day Bonus: Bill Proposes P3,000 Increase for Public School Teachers

Makati City Representative Luis Campos Jr. has proposed a bill to raise the yearly World Teachers’ Day Incentive Benefit (WTDIB) for public school teachers employed by the Department of Education (DepEd) to P3,000. House Bill No. 7840 aims to increase the benefit from P1,000 to P3,000.

The proposed legislation is an effort to enhance the WTDIB’s value and to establish the incentive benefit through a permanent legal framework. As the vice chairperson of the House appropriations committee, Campos cited the 1987 Constitution’s mandate for the State to attract and retain exceptional talent in teaching by offering adequate compensation and job satisfaction.

Currently, public school teachers receive a WTDIB of P1,000 each year. The benefit is disbursed every October 5th, which is celebrated as World Teachers’ Day in honor of educators. Public school teachers first received the WTDIB in 2019 after Congress included it in the national budget, initially allocating P800 million for the benefit.

In the 2023 General Appropriations Law, the incentive benefit is allocated P900 million. Since 2019, Congress has provided a total of P4.4 billion in funding for the WTDIB, as reported by Campos.
