Araling Panlipunan, MAPEH to be combined in revised K-12 Curriculum

Araling Panlipunan, MAPEH to be combined in revised K-12 Curriculum

The Department of Education (DepEd) in the country plans to create a new learning area for kindergarten to grade 3 students as part of the revised national curriculum.

According to the draft of the updated K-12 curriculum, Araling Panlipunan, culture, arts, and health will be combined into a single subject called SIKAP, which stands for civics, culture, history, and physical well-being.

DepEd explains that this change aims to focus on foundational literacy in the first key stage, from kindergarten to grade 3, as both social studies and MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) are multidisciplinary subjects.

Additionally, the curriculum will incorporate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), with a focus on the engineering design process to guide students toward innovation.

The department emphasizes its goal to strengthen students’ technology and digital literacy, creativity, openness, critical thinking, problem-solving, reflective thinking, and future orientation.
