DepEd urged to act more to improve quality of education
Filomeno Sta. Ana III, the co-founder of the Action for Economic Reforms, said the country needs to be more proactive in changing the poor system of education.
“Much has to be done regarding the quality of education,” said Sta. Ana. “Regarding the budget, education has always received highest allocation. (But) the question is allocation within the DepEd—where to spend the money. And, as I said, emphasis has to be given to quality.”
Sta. Ana said there is nothing wrong with allocating funds for building schools and strengthening human resources but the government should provide equal priority to improving the curriculum.
“They are all important. But even if we do increase human resources, even if we increase the salary of teachers, even if we build new schools, but if the curriculum and the quality of teaching are inferior, then the problem remains,” Sta. Ana added.
In previous years, the country is behind in international assessments on reading, mathematics, and science.
“Going forward, for remote learning to deliver on its potential, the analysis shows the need to ensure strong alignment between three complimentary components: Effective teaching, suitable technology, and engaged learners,” said the World Bank.
Sta. Ana believes that the return of face-to-face classes would help improve the country’s economy battered by the pandemic.
“It’s also clear that face-to-face is superior to other ways of doing classes,” said Sta. Ana. “Recently, the NEDA estimated that the resumption of face-to-face (classes) can result in additional economic activities, translating to about P12 billion per week.”
