No class size limit for face-to-face classes – DepEd

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte-Carpio stressed that the Department of Education will not limit the class size for face-to-face learning.

“Hindi po kami naglagay ng exact size ng class dahil iba-iba po ang situation ng lahat ng schools natin…Ang nilagay natin [sa DepEd Order No. 34 s. 2022] at inapprove din ni Pangulo [Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.] noong Cabinet Meeting ay physical distancing will be implemented whenever possible,” she said in an interview.

Duterte-Carpio added that adding more classrooms is on the way to address overcrowding in schools.

She added that Covid-19 vaccination for students is not mandatory, and co-mingling of vaccinated and non-vaccinated students will be allowed.

Duterte-Carpio added that learnings during the two years of the pandemic will help implement health protocols.

But, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) said that the “lack of substantive health measures is a recipe for disaster” for face-to-face classes.

“They removed any requisite for inspection or even a mere checklist of requirements for safe school reopening. There is no standard for classroom ventilation aside from opening the doors and windows. There is no requisite for hand washing facilities or steady water supply. The need for a clinic or a nurse is not even mentioned,” ACT President Vladimer Quetua said.
