What’s new with the iPhone 13 series, specs and features

Apple has finally launched its newest iPhone series for the year — the iPhone 13. During the live stream, the company introduced four new members which include the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 mini, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The iPhone 13 and the mini variant house the same specs but with different screen sizes. The same goes for the 13 Pro and Pro Max models.

So what exactly are the things to get excited about with Apple’s latest?

Starting with the non-pro variant, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini now offer Super Retina XD3 OLED screens which are essentially brighter, more colorful, and more power-efficient overall. The iPhone 13 houses a 6.-1-inch display while the mini has a smaller 5-4-inch one. Screen resolution offered for the iPhone 13 is at 2532×1170 while the mini has a slightly smaller 2340×1080. Other screen technologies include HDR display and TrueTone color.

Its design remains mostly the same apart from a smaller notch and redesigned camera bump which now has a diagonal arrangement for its cameras.

The major improvements are seen in the devices’ cameras and processors.

At the heart of the iPhone 13 series is Apple’s A15 Bionic which, according to the company, has 50% faster CPU and 30% faster graphics than its competition, only outpowered by the iPhone 13 Pro variants. It features 6 CPU cores, 4 GPU cores, and nearly 15 billion transistors. 5G connectivity has also been improved with support for more countries.

Cameras are probably the most in-demand feature of iPhones. On the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini are dual cameras with upgraded performance across the board. Both offer a dual 12-megapixel camera system consisting of a wide and ultra-wide lens. The cameras offer the upgraded Smart HDR 4 which intelligently optimizes contrast, lighting and skin tones of up to 4 people in one photo.

Night mode is further improved with Deep Fusion that uses AI to analyze different exposures of a photo to provide the best possible result.

New to the iPhone 13 series is a feature called Photographic Styles. ThIs new feature is a more advanced and intelligent way to stylize photos. What makes it interesting is that when you decide on the look or style that you want, it will be applied to future photos or captures.

This could be useful for users who like to keep a general color scheme for their photos for posting on Instagram or other social media platforms.

Another new addition is the Cinematic video mode which not only replicates shallow depth of field but also allows automatic focus shifting during recording. Additionally, you can also readjust focus points during editing. Cinematic mode shoots in Dolby Vision HDR but is limited to 1080p at 30fps.

Lastly, for battery, the iPhone series offers Apple’s longest battery yet with up to 2.5 more hours for the iPhone 13 and 1.4 hours on the mini compared to its predecessor.

The iPhone 13 and 13 mini come in a new finish with 5 colors available — Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and Red. Storage options include 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB for both. Pricing for the iPhone 13 starts at $799/PhP 50,990 while the iPhone 13 mini starts at $699/PhP 44,990.

Now on to the Pro models. The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max will have everything the iPhone 13 base model offers with a few more additions and, of course, bigger sizes.

The iPhone 13 Pro is offered with a 6.1-inch OLED screen while the Pro Max at a 6.7-inch one, also OLED. Both feature the above-mentioned XDR displays but the Pro variants also offer the all-new ProMotion. This is basically Apple’s branding for its 120Hz adaptive refresh display which intelligently switches refresh rates to optimize power consumption.

The iPhone 13 Pro comes with a screen resolution of 2532×1170 and the Pro Max with 2778×1284.

The super-fast A15 Bionic chip is in here too as well as increased battery life. With the iPhone 13 Pro Max, you’re getting up to 2.5 more hours of power while the 13 Pro offers up to 1.5 hours more.

For its cameras, the pro models offer a triple 12-megapixel rear camera system with telephoto, wide, and ultra-wide lenses. The new telephoto camera offers 3x optical zoom in and 2x optical zoom out, and 6x optical zoom is available for all other lenses. Digital zoom is also increased from 10x to 15x.

The ultra-wide camera also gets upgraded macro shooting capabilities with a focusing distance of just 2 centimeters for really up-close shots. Macro shooting is also available for video with slow-motion and time-lapse as well.

The wide cameras take care of low-light with its wide aperture and Apple’s largest sensor yet. Aperture on the wide camera is now at f/1.5 (from f/1.6 on the iPhone 12) while the ultra-wide gets a larger improvement from f/2.4 to f/1.8.

The Pro modes also offer the earlier-mentioned Cinematic video mode. But being Pro variants, these models offer recording in Apple ProRes format which should excite most video creators and professionals.

Apart from those, we’re also getting features like Photographic Styles, Dolby Vision HDR recording, Smart HDR 4, Deep Fusion, and more.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max come in four colors — Sierra Blue, Silver, Gold, and Graphite. There will also be four storage options ranging from 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and the all-new 1TB variant. Current pricing starts at $999/PhP 63,990 for the iPhone 13 Pro while the iPhone 13 Pro Max starts at $1,099/PhP 70,990.

Overall, the newest iPhone series offers thoughtful upgrades including better battery life, expanded 5G, and even upgraded 1TB storage for the Pro variants. It continues its legacy of setting mobile photography and videography standards with its premium camera offerings and technologies, especially with the new Cinematic video mode that’s sure to excite mobile videographers. And, of course, the industry-leading A15 Bionic chip ties these all together to make for the classic, high-performing mobile device Apple is known to churn out.
