The recent 2021 PlayStation Showcase was filled to the brim with exciting new announcements, features, and previews. From the first look at the new and highly-anticipated God of War game to a new easter-egg filled ad, there’s something for everyone.
The 42-minute presentation was streamed live on the company’s social media channels and is still available to watch now. But if you don’t have 42 minutes to spare, here are some of the key highlights of this year’s PlayStation Showcase.
God of War: Ragnarok
We finally get a first look at the finale of the God of War series. Continuing the events of the original 2018 game, we’re introduced to the two main antagonists, Freya and Thor. Ragnarok will also introduce new creatures, a chance to visit all of the Nine Realms, and more diverse and rich locations.
God of War: Ragnarok is set to release sometime in 2022 for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine
Insomniac Games announces not one but two new official Marvel games heading to PlayStation.
With Spider-Man 2, gamers will return to the stories of Peter Parker and Miles Morales from the previous games. According to Insomniac Games, the same development team who worked on the first game will also be in charge of the sequel so we can expect the same gameplay made better.
A surprise announcement was bringing in Tony Todd as the voice of Venom. Peter and Miles’ voice actors will reprise their roles as well.
Catching everyone off guard, Insomniac also unveils an all-new game featuring X-men’s Wolverine. Coming from the creative team of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the 1-minute trailer of Wolverine shows a similar art style but no gameplay footage was released yet.
Project Eve
Debuting its first console game, Shift Up finally reveals a closer look at Project Eve. The game focuses on Eve, a paratrooper squad survivor who’s part of the larger battle to win earth back from invaders called NA:tives.
The game has been in development for two years now but no release date was announced.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
The award-winning classic game is getting a next-gen remake. 20 years since its release, Sony, Aspyr, and Lucasfilm Games have teamed up to not only remake the well-loved game but remaking it from scratch.
The team aims to bring the game’s familiar experience and elevate it with the PlayStation 5’s groundbreaking graphics and power. The game is still in early development but the companies are excited to bring this game into the new generation of consoles.
Easter-egg filled global brand spot
Among the many game announcements, Sony also introduces its newest global ad for PlayStation.
According to Sony, this new spot “takes the viewer on a reimagined journey through one of history’s oldest and most revered games. In a fantastical city as the backdrop, play is governed by rules and limitations — and we see what happens when one player defies conventions and stands triumphant, proving that play has no limits. ”
In the ad are also small nods to different games including Uncharted, Pac-man, Final Fantasy, and more. How many can you spot?
Other announcements
Among these, other notable announcements include a new, remastered bundle for Uncharted that’s heading to the PlayStation 5 and PC. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves will include Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. It’s set to release in early 2022 for console and will follow to PC shortly after.
Gran Tourismo is also arriving for PS4 and PS5 on March 4 and will return with classic cars, iconic tracks, and more. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is slated for an October 26 release date.
